Every year, CBSE students in grades 1 through 8 are required to complete a project that is not specific to any one subject.

According to a CBSE circular dated May 14, all CBSE schools must now make sure that they implement art-integrated learning for classes 1 through 10 starting with the 2020–21 academic year.

Each academic year, CBSE students in Classes 1 through 8 are required to complete at least one art-integrated project that can be used for internal assessment in the relevant areas. The project need not be exclusively focused on one subject.

However, class 9 and class 10 CBSE students must complete an art-integrated project for every subject that will be taken into account for internal assessment.

In the circular, CBSE made it clear that the introduction of art-integrated learning was intended to be a teaching tool rather than to improve artistic ability in general.

It was a way to use art to help educate and comprehend a range of disciplines.

All the requirements for art-integrated projects for CBSE schools and students are listed below.

What is art integration?

Different art forms are used in art integration to provide experience-based learning of various concepts across multiple courses.

This would aid in “imbibing the Indian ethos through integration of Indian art and culture in the teaching and learning process at every level,” according to the CBSE circular.

The statement continued, “This art-integrated strategy will deepen the connections between education and culture.”

Why is CBSE introducing art-integrated learning?

The purpose of implementing this art-integrated learning is to “allow all stakeholders to follow Competency Based Education (CBE)” and to make the teaching and learning process more enjoyable.

On January 18, 2019, the Central Board of Secondary Education ordered all of its associated schools to implement a Learning Outcome (LO) Based Teaching-Learning process in order to help students receive an education that will enable them to apply their knowledge in practical settings.

According to the CBSE notification, “CBE can only be implemented through innovative and happy experiential pedagogies like Art-Integrated and Sport-Integrated Learning, Storytelling, etc. that promote reflection, critical thinking, creativity, initiation, self-direction, and other 21st Century Skills.”

The notification continued, “All this is done to prepare students to be citizens who are prepared for the 21st century by giving them the competencies to understand, analyse, evaluate, interpret, and innovate various real-life situations that they require to face in the world outside the classrooms or an environment beyond their schools and homes.

Guidelines for CBSE schools to introduce art integrated learning

Here are the requirements for art-integrated projects that CBSE students must complete, as stated in the CBSE circular:

1. Transdisciplinary projects incorporating art should be used in grades 1 through 8. The project work may cover many subjects, and it may be taken into account for internal assessment in the relevant subjects.

2. For internal evaluation, students in classes 9 and 10 of the CBSE will engage in art-integrated project work as a subject-enrichment activity across all subjects.

3. CBSE students must use some form of Indian art into their work because one of the goals of art integrated learning is to increase students’ awareness of the rich Indian cultural diversity. Teachers must help students learn this art form and how to apply it to the assignment.

4. According to the Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat Program, CBSE students in classes 1 through 10 must select at least one art integrated project that incorporates the art form of the matched Indian state and Union Territory (table provided in annexure in CBSE circular linked below).

For instance, Sikkim’s artistic tradition must be incorporated by CBSE students in Delhi.

5. At the beginning of the academic session, subject teachers and art teachers must organise and discuss the projects in advance so that students can receive the necessary direction to carry out diverse projects.

6. The emphasis should be placed on the investigation of novel subjects that have not previously been covered in the classroom. To give pupils practical experience, teachers must encourage study into the subjects.

7. The integrated art projects for the CBSE should be completed in an environmentally sustainable manner, utilising locally accessible resources without placing an unnecessary financial strain on parents or guardians.

8. To complete the project work, the teachers may use the following technique to integrate the arts with other subjects:

9. CBSE students should work in groups of 4-5 students to complete the projects.

10. It should be highlighted that while developing art-integrated projects, the art component shouldn’t be so complex that it exceeds the teacher’s authority to instruct the students. It ought to be easy enough to do without the help of artists or art instructors.

11. Age-appropriate and relevant assessment methods should be used for these CBSE art integrated projects. While planning the projects, teachers and students can collaborate to develop criteria and rubrics for assessment.

Before beginning work on the art integrated project, students must be aware of the assessment criteria and the maximum scores.

12. By allocating dates and months for the completion of project work by the students, CBSE schools and instructors may prepare their academic calendar. Records of the evaluation of these project works should be kept at the schools.

13. The art integrated project work will also play a significant role in determining how well the CBSE student performed in art-related activities and how well they met the learning objectives for the subject(s).

14. The CBSE will collect the grades given for these projects, which are part of the class 10 topic enrichment activities, when the grades from the internal assessment are uploaded.

Art-Integrated Learning (AIL) to be used as a teaching tool for classes 1 to 12, not for learning art skills

In addition to the Art Education under the co-scholastic area as specified in the Secondary School Curriculum of the Board, AIL will continue to be used as a pedagogical instrument for classes 1 through 12.

The goal of AIL is to use art as a tool to teach other subjects, not to promote the arts and artistic skills. Accepting art as a learning tool should be the main goal here.

In order to encourage students to participate in planned art activities and experience the beauty of the arts, subject teachers can use simple art forms in the classroom. This allows students to learn about and articulate the fundamental ideas of various subjects, which they can then apply to their daily lives.

The CBSE circular that is linked below includes Annexure-II, which lists art activities that can be combined with many topics to improve learning. The annexure’s list of activities is merely indicative.

Correlation of AIL activities should be seen widely and not be limited to one particular type of subject. For instance, concepts from the study of agriculture can be applied to math and science.

Teachers and students may choose to incorporate both performance and visual arts into AIL programmes. Since the ability to create art is not a criterion for evaluation, children can experiment and may produce very creative expressions that help them attain the learning objectives.

Schools need to report on the implementation of Art-Education (AE) and Art-Integrated Learning (AIL)

For reporting on the implementation of AE and AIL, CBSE has established the Art Education (AE) and Art Integrated Learning (AIL)- AE & AIL portal.

To allow students in classes 10 and 12 to sit for the board exams, CBSE schools must input student art education and art integrated learning project data to the AE&AIL portal.
